Geld accounts

The geld was the principal form of taxation in the reign of William the Conqueror. It was based on the value of land and applied to all landowners. Although it dates from around the time of Exon Domesday the script is smaller and the parchment trimmed to a different size – evidently, the document was not produced for the original Domesday Inquest but was bound in with Exon Domesday at a later date.
