The Organist

Dr Alfred William Wilcock (1887-1953) was organist at Exeter Cathedral from 1933 to 1952. Originally from Lancashire, he trained at Manchester Cathedral under the distinguished organist and composer James Kendrick Pyne (1852-1938). At Exeter, Wilcock was both organist and choir master; he conducted the concerts of the Exeter Musical Society, a large choir of some 150 singers which performed regularly in the Cathedral. Wilcock was a well-known composer and many people came to hear him play. His memorial in the North Aisle reads, ‘In peace and through war he made melody’.
